WARM winter coats are being collected in Bristol as part of an appeal to help rough sleepers.

You can take them to City Hall or the council’s other main city centre office, 100 Temple Street, to be passed on the the charity Caring in Bristol. Volunteer council staff are also collecting food and clothing for the Julian Trust. Official figures showed the numbers sleeping on the streets rose to nearly 100 a night last November.

Meanwhile, more volunteers are needed to help run night shelters in Bristol. The Rough Sleeping Partnership has opened 65 extra bed spaces for people since last Christmas but a spokesman for  the charity St Mungo’s said: “The night shelters rely heavily on the goodwill of volunteers to stay open.” Contact themon 07736 887052 or email volunteers@mungos.org  marking it  Bristol Night Shelter.
