A FISHPONDS businessman has come up with a plan to turn the former tile depot in Fishponds Road into an indoor market.
Mark Harris envisages it being “a mix of St Nicholas Market and St Philip's fruit and veg market” with fresh produce stalls, artists' stalls and general market stalls.
“It would be a little bit of everything,” he said. “I'd like to see wooden sheds, a bit like at the Christmas market in Broadmead, and a real community feel. There would be room for about 30-40 stalls and we would be quite strict about what goes in so we get a good mix.
“It would be very affordable for stallholders and would be a fantastic place to shop. We want to create a place where people can sell their products with very low overheads that can pass on to the customer, creating a sustainable, viable place for people to shop locally.”
Mr Harris, who runs Osbornes stationery shop in Fishponds, said he had been amazed at the overwhelmingly positive response in the first few days after making his idea public.
“I can't believe how well it has gone. Several people have already said they would take stalls and many have said they would use it,” he said.
“I have been thinking about this for quite a while. I think it fits the building and it fits Fishponds.”
Mr Harris has been talking to councillors,  business people and Fishponds Planning Group about developing a detailed proposal. The intention is that 25 per cent of the profits would go into a fund to help local small businesses, community projects, charities and other causes.
He is looking into the possibility of grants and plans a crowdfunding campaign.
The scheme could be an alternative use for the building if McDonald's fails to win its appeal agaisnt the refusal of permission for a drive-thru and takeaway at the site.
