BRISTOL’S Lord Mayor Lesley Alexander is looking even more spendid these days - thanks to a new lace jabot made in her home patch.

Councillor Alexander, who represents represents the Frome Vale ward on Bristol City Council, visited the Bristol Lace Group at the Vassall Centre to receive the addition to her regalia.

The jabot has been made by seven members of the group  after one of its members, Evelyn Smith, discovered that our city’s Lord Mayors have only had a machine jabot to wear for their year in office.

As an experienced lace maker and lace teacher, Evelyn thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for the BLG to promote lace and provide a lasting gift to the city of Bristol.  With the support of members she designed a Torchon style lace jabot that could be made and presented while Councillor Alexander was still in office.  Excluding the design, preparation and making up, the lace itself took over 400 hours to make.

The group’s chairwoman Marion Dumbell handed over the jabot at the group’s monthly meeting.
