FISHPONDS Park will play host to a unique light show this Christmas thanks to international artist Ulf Pedersen.

Ulf, who lives near the park, is taking time out from his work installing illuminations in New Zealand, London and Tyntesfield in North Somerset to creae a display for local residents to enjoy.

The first Glow in the Park is being organised by the Friends of Fishponds Park, a group started earlier this year which has big plans for revamping the green space at the heart of Fishponds.

It has received some funding and has also been collecting donations via crowdfunding.

Brian Smith, chairman of the Friends, said: “We are very grateful to Ulf for bringing his creative flair to help raise the profile of the park. The lights will be switched on on December 2 and will shine nightly from 4pm until midnight.

“ I am very pleased with the response so far. This is the first time we have done this and it is a big learning curve for us. We are already planning an even better display for next year.”

Ulf said he and his family moved to Fishponds about this time last year and liked the illuminated Christmas trees outside the shops and those in the trees at the park entrance.

“I noticed there was a big dark hole in the park and thought it would be nice to light it up in some way. My wife Graina ended up joining the Friends; they were talking about lighting, she explained what I did, and we decided to give it a try,” he said.

“In Victorian times, parks were lit and people would promenade in them. Now they have become no-go areas. I am lighting the trees in the centre of the park to invite people in to the space and to celebrate the park a bit more. If people like it, we could build on this for future years and include more of the park and the churchyard."
